Thrifty Valentine's Treats: Cookies in a Jar.

Instead of slaving over homemade cards this year, I decided that I would send out a little love in a jar.  Because isn't Valentine's Day all about eating really delicious sweets?  Thought so.  Let's call this "love canning".

I've seen cookies in a jar all over the Internet and blogging world and decided it was my time to try it out.  Plus, it's almost like I get to be in the kitchen with the people I'm sending them to.  That's a stretch, but you get what I'm saying.  These little sweets are fun to throw together and also quite thrifty to make.  Plus I think they are pretty darn cute.

By the way...that love canning comment above was lame.  But I can't bring myself to delete it.  I'm sorry.

Ingredients (per jar):
  • 1 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup oats
  • 3/4 cup chocolate chips
  • 3/4 cup M&M's
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/4 cup pecans (optional)

Start with however many Mason jars you want to use.  Make sure they are squeaky clean.  Start layering the ingredients in this order:
  • flour
  • baking powder
  • baking soda
  • salt
  • oats
Make sure everything is packed in well.  It's a tight squeeze to get all of the ingredients in, but you can do it!

Now for the good part.  These two ingredients are totally up to you.  I chose chocolate chips and cherry M&Ms to go with the color scheme.  And cherry M&Ms are delicious.  Have you had them?

You can switch the ingredients around to make them for any holiday or event.  Pretty versatile little boogers, eh?  Boogers probably isn't the best word.  Ah, well.

After the chocolate and other goodies, add the brown and white sugar.  This is also where the pecans go if you have chosen to use them.  Place the top on and you're done!  Easy as pie right?

I topped mine with fabric, a bow, and these cute printables (which you can find here).

Somewhere in there you need to include these instructions.  I wrote them on the back of the homemade sweets cards!

Just a little early!  Enjoy!
